#46: Digital Fabrication & How It's Changing The Workshop

In this episode, Johnny, James, and Zack talk about digital fabrication (CNC, 3D printing, etc.) and how these technologies are changing the workshop, for the good and bad.

We’re on Patreon!

We've added a $250 goal for weekend show. Tons of support levels, a weekly After Show, monthly hangouts, and more! Our top patrons this week are Make Build Modify, Master of None, and Deby Brooke!

What’s new/ what are we working on?

  • Zack: Hanging in Chattanooga
  • Johnny: Concrete end table. Published Welding table video.
  • James: French Cleats, running, and more running
In this video, I show you how to build a welding table using a kit from WeldTables.com. The folks over there were nice enough to send me one of their welding table kits to use in my shop.

Q&A:

From Ryan Wall:

My question is about 3D modeling/CAD programs. Some people use Sketchup and others use Fusion 360. Both are free (fusion is free if you don't make oodles of money) but each are slightly different. I know you all tend to lean towards Sketchup while other makers, especially those with CNC machines, lean towards fusion. What're the pros/cons of each?

Joke of the week

Q: How do trees get on the internet?

A; They log in!

What’s new/what are we watching/reading?

Johnny: Lignum, Wooden Lounger Chair

A video of making a lounger chair that I was planning to make for quite some time now. I mostly wondered if my idea was structurally strong enough to support an 100 kg adult. It turned out it is, no problem! :) I started by drawing a layout on two 25 mm plywood boards.

James: Tool restorations Pale Dog Tool Co.

This Stanley No 45 was given to me by a very good friend of mine and it was in his family for many generations before that. The goal here was not to make it look new, but give it new life and put it back to work.
